Southern Colorado is renowned for its natural splendor and breathtaking views of Pikes Peak. Pike National Forest is comprised of over 1,105,704 acres located in the Front Range. Mount Evans and Lost Creek Wilderness take up over 140,000 acres of the Pike National Forest where visitors enjoy scenic drives, fishing, hiking and biking trails while watching the local wildlife. Close by theTri-Lakes region offers many hiking trails that are preserved and maintained through the cooperative efforts of local government, organizations and citizens. Much of the terrain is accessible through a complex network of trails that wind among the communities. Monument Rock, for which the town is named, stands amidst the Monument Open Space Preserve, a symbol of the town’s enduring nature. Extensive trails around the rock cater to horseback riding, dog walking, jogging, and serve as a hub to other locales. Palmer Lake is a popular destination offering fishing and walking trails. It is the beginning of the 14-mile Sante Fe Regional Trail, one of the longest continuous trails in El Paso Couny. Following the abandoned Santa Fe Railroad line, it winds through several communities including the Air Force Academy opening into a number of trailheads. Hikers, bikers and joggers using the trail always enjoy the scenery and wildlife. Golf is also a popular pastime in the area, and residents can choose from either public or private courses. Woodmoor Country Club is a private 6,700-yard, par-72 course located in the Woodmoor development east of I-25 and Monument. King’s Deer public golf course offers a challenging course dotted with bunkers and water hazards, located among the luxurious King’s Deer Subdivision. Perry Park Country Club boasts a private course that is renowned for its scenery, situated in the midst of trees and rock outcroppings. And, the Air Force Academy opens it’s picturesque courses for many community events. Within a short drive visitors can enjoy the Garden of the Gods, Manitou Cliff Dwellings and the Cave of the Winds all offering breathtaking panoramas with distinctive red rock formations. More destinations include the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the Pikes Peak Cog Railway that brings visitors to the summit of Pikes Peak, Seven Falls , Royal Gorge Scenic Railway, and Crystal Reservoir. |
